RCotD #51

Random Card of the Day #51:

Mogg Fanatic - R
Creature - Goblin
Sacrifice Mogg Fanatic: Mogg Fanatic deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
1/1

Initial thoughts:

This is exactly what a strong red card should do. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of creatures. This one however, is slightly better because of it's "on demand" ability compared to those who need to die first: Mudbutton Torchrunner, Goblin Arsonist.

The other red cards that are among my favorites are similar to this but only happen when they enter the battlefield: Fire Imp, Flametongue Kavu, and it's weaker counterparts: Sparkmage Apprentice, Blisterstick Shaman. All of these cards have something in common, and for me a I love them. They encourage counterplay. Kind of like you sit back and draw cards until your opponent plays something, and almost regardless of what they play you just sit back and say, "I can deal with that." The other thing I love about them is it is designed for a 2-for-1. If you do this enough times, you'll have card advantage over your opponent and with enough card advantage you can win.

Mogg Fanatic on the other hand, isn't responsive play, it's aggressive play that punishes trading with your opponent. All you do is swing every turn and blow up anything in your way. Red Deck Wins style. If your opponent tries to remove it, you just sacrifice in response. If your opponent drops a 2/2 or maybe a Garruk's Companion, drop another creature, probably Fire Imp, to kill it and resume as normal.

A fabulous card. It may not have the enter or leave effects I like more, but it is still a great one drop, and it's not too terrible late game either. 4/5

P.S.: Happy New Years from Snow Covered Swamp!
